Introducing Bublr 2.0

by Laura Bolger | May 13, 2025
Bublr Bikes is doubling its station network in Milwaukee thanks to a $4.15 million investment from a federal grant and city match—its largest infrastructure boost to date. The expansion will add hundreds of new e-bikes and stations, improve access to affordable transportation, and support the city's goal of 50 miles of protected bikeways by 2026. Community feedback is encouraged via the Bublr 2.0 survey on Engage MKE. This growth strengthens Bublr’s mission to connect neighborhoods, close last-mile transit gaps, and build a more inclusive, sustainable bikeshare system.

Bublr Bikes Expands Bikeshare Network Through Federal Grant and City Match
The expansion will double the number of stations in the city of Milwaukee, enhancing accessibility

MILWAUKEE – April 10, 2025 – Bublr Bikes, Milwaukee's nonprofit bikeshare system, today announced the expansion of the bikeshare network in partnership with the City of Milwaukee and a Federal Transportation Alternatives Program grant. This grant and the city’s match, totalling $4.15M, is the largest investment in Bublr Bikes infrastructure to date.

“This investment of federal and local funds will increase access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable transportation options throughout the city,” said Laura Bolger, Bublr Bikes executive director. “Bublr has worked with the City of Milwaukee to determine the locations of these new stations, strategically identifying areas that will help us to connect communities through biking. Today, we announce those plans and invite feedback from our neighbors to ensure the community has a voice in the process.”

Bublr and the City of Milwaukee encourage residents to complete the Bublr 2.0 feedback survey found on the City’s Engage MKE site: https://engage.milwaukee.gov/bublr2-0. After completing the survey, participants will receive a discount code for an annual membership. In the coming weeks, yard signs will be placed around the city to identify general locations of future Bublr Stations. Each sign has a QR code for additional feedback.

This expansion directly supports the City of Milwaukee's vision to develop 50 miles of protected bikeways by 2026. The strategic placement of these new Bublr stations complements Milwaukee’s growing network of protected bike lanes, creating more comprehensive and safer cycling infrastructure for both commuters and recreational riders. Currently, 80 percent of Bublr Stations are co-located with MCTS stops; additions to the network will continue this pattern to aid in last-mile transportation gaps.

“Bikeshare is a great option for residents and visitors in Milwaukee, and I am so pleased Bublr is growing with this grant,” Mayor Cavalier Johnson said. “Increasingly, our city has wonderful transportation choices. Bublr Bikes is one of the best examples of that.”

As Milwaukee's premier bikeshare system, Bublr Bikes currently operates over 100 stations across Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, and West Allis, creating a robust Inter-Municipal System that serves diverse communities throughout the region. Adding to the network aligns with Bublr's commitment to building a contiguous, inclusive network that connects neighborhoods and provides accessible transportation options for all residents.

Bublr Bikes remains dedicated to community engagement and integration, working directly with BIDS, NIDS, community organizations and residents to thoughtfully expand its network. The expansion will include adding density to the existing Bublr network and expanding into adjacent neighborhoods to continue the mission of connecting communities.

“Successful Bikeshare networks are designed so riders are never more than 2-3 blocks away from the nearest station,” Bolger explains. “This expansion moves Bublr in that direction and keeps Milwaukee’s bikeshare as one of the best in the country.”

Additionally, due to the popularity of the electric-assist bikes, an additional 500 e-bikes will be added to the Bublr fleet with this expansion.
